If the thought of public speaking makes your stomach do flip-flops, here are five pro-tips to help you nail your next presentation, no matter how much you dread it.
Practice, Practice, Practice
We’ve all sat in an audience where the speaker is clearly just winging it. If you practice your presentation at home or run through your slide deck with a family member, you’ll feel more relaxed and confident when it’s time to take the stage. Plus, the more times you run through your presentation before the big day, the better you’ll be at pacing and managing your time.
Get to the Point
Your core message is the star of the show. Before you even open your slide deck, figure out the one big thing you want your audience to remember. Then, build your presentation around that. Every point, every image, every video clip should reinforce that message, not distract from it. This concept is helpful to keep in mind, especially when you are tempted to cram a ton of data onto one slide. Think "less is more" and "direct to the point." Additionally, keep your font size legible from a significant distance.
Connect With Your Audience
When presenting your message, smile, make eye contact (even if it's just a few key people at first), and genuinely try to connect. People are way more likely to engage with someone who is approachable than someone who is just reading the slides aloud. Also, don’t forget to inject humor where you can. Information presented with humor is often easier for people to remember and recall later.
Focus on Stories, Not Data
People connect with stories. Instead of just rattling off data, think about a personal anecdote or a relatable example that illustrates your point. Stories resonate emotionally and remain memorable long after facts or data are forgotten, a principle supported by numerous studies on memory and storytelling.
Give Yourself a Pep Talk Before You Begin
Before you begin, tell yourself, “I’ve got this.” You put in the work. You know your stuff. Focus on your message, engage your audience, tell a story, and just breathe. You'll be nailing those presentations in no time.
