The research is in! Social media management sites like HootSuite and Sprout Social report that to capture your audience’s attention on social media, your videos must now be 15 seconds or less. That means in the time it takes to tie your shoelaces, you have to hook your viewers and tell a concise story.
Sound impossible? Not if you take the right approach! We’ve got you covered with three crucial steps you can take to create short-form videos that stand out and drive engagement.
First, put your most compelling video first. You’ve got about three seconds to stop the scroll. That’s all the time you have to hook viewers before they swipe past your video. Your opening shot is your headline, so make it impossible to ignore. Start with something that sparks curiosity, emotion or surprise. Ask a bold question, show an unexpected visual or start mid-action. Pair your great opening shot/video segment with a surprise element such as fades, glares, time-lapses or slow motion and you are guaranteed even more viewers. Remember, your video is competing with thousands of others for attention! To really drive home your message, use the appropriate music. Instagram's algorithm in particular favors content that uses trending audio; users are more likely to engage with familiar sounds. However, the style and content of your video may call for smooth jazz or an ‘80s throwback song. Let the content dictate the music.
Second, tell a concise story. Once you’ve hooked them, give them a reason to stick around. Even in 15 seconds, your video should have a clear beginning, middle and end. Avoid overwhelming your viewers. Focus on a single message or idea, and use quick cuts, appropriate music and compelling visuals to convey your narrative efficiently.
Finally, encourage interaction. Social media is meant to be, well, social! You’re not speaking into a void; your audience wants to interact. Social media should foster a dialogue. End your video with a clear call to action, whether it's asking a question, prompting comments or directing viewers to your profile for more. Engaging with your audience builds relationships when you respond to comments and questions promptly and in a friendly tone.
By implementing these three steps, your 15-second videos can become powerful tools for connecting with your audience and achieving your social media goals.
